This workshop will examine options for community-based development organizations to engage with their local public schools.  A structured assessment appropriate for executive directors, board members, planners, and community engagement managers will lead participants through key questions to determine appropriate fit of various activities and strategies.  Case studies will be shared of direct educational services to children and families, and collaborative efforts with local schools.  Participants will leave with practical tools for evaluating the many ways their organization might support improved educational opportunity in their community, and concrete ideas for necessary steps to get started. 

This training will be led by Susan Naimark a consultant who works with grassroots organizations, nonprofit and public agencies to create responsive communities.  She is the author of The Education of a White Parent:  Wrestling with Race and Opportunity in the Boston public schools (Levellers Press).  In her previous role, Ms. Naimark served as the Director of Community Building and Organizing Programs for NeighborWorks America.
